How stress affects your skin

The holidays can be a very stressful time of year with shopping, out-of-town guests, parties, kid’s activities, decorating, baking, and the list seems to go on and on. Did you know that stress can wreak havoc on your skin? Read on to discover why it’s important to chill out this holiday season so you can enjoy a beautiful complexion.

Wrinkles

When you experience chronic on going stress your body continually produces a hormone called cortisol. This particular hormone breaks down collagen (a vital protein in your skin responsible for firm healthy skin) creating lines and wrinkles.

Acne

Stress hormones also cause other issues within the skin such as adult acne. As you become stressed out the likelihood of picking, poking, and squeezing increases, leaving your skin inflamed, red, and painful.

Skin Irritation

Unfortunately, stress can also exacerbate existing skin conditions such as dermatitis, rosacea, hives, and psoriasis.

Puffy Eyes

As you push through your day feeling stressed your sleep becomes disrupted. Lack of sleep then creates its own slew of problems ranging from leaky capillaries, fluid retention, poor circulation, and inflammation. These issues then lead the way to puffy eyes and under eye circles.

During this hectic time of year make sure you take time for yourself no matter how small it may seem. Give yourself a chance to breathe. Set aside some time every day to do something relaxing such as reading, listening to music, walking, watching your favorite movie, sipping a hot cup of tea, or my favorite; resting in front of my DPL Therapy System. Whatever it may be that helps you wind down, it’s important to your health and your skin that you don’t let stress get you wound up.
