Think you’re doing the right thing for your skin and applying the best skin care ingredients for your complexion? Think again! It turns out there is a time of day and place within your routine that will give your skin the best results possible.
Vitamin C is an amazing anti-aging skin care ingredient and a powerful antioxidant, but did you know that it shouldn’t be worn with retinol? When the two ingredients are combined they end up negating each other and render the other ineffective. You should also be aware that combining vitamin C with alpha hydroxyl acids (AHAs) such as glycolic or lactic acid can be very irritating especially if you have sensitive skin.
Talking about AHAs brings up another important consideration. Because these acids are such effective exfoliators they can thin your protective barrier, therefore it’s a good idea to apply a rich moisturizer with an SPF of 30 or higher during the day. You will also want to be sure to use AHAs only once a day so you don’t over strip your skin.
Retinoids should only be worn at night. Using these ingredients during the day is a definite no no as the sun renders them powerless and the combination of the two can actually damage your skin. The use of retinoids also makes your skin more sensitive to the sun so be sure to apply an SPF moisturizer in the morning.
These are all fantastic ingredients when used correctly and really impact the health of your skin. Just arm yourself with this knowledge so you’re sure to gain optimal results.
